The Rise of Curly-Haired Cats from a Shelter Kitten and Their Takeover of the Internet

An orange kitten with curly hair took the internet by storm last week. The accompanying caption read, “I’ve never seen a cat with curls until now.” The unique feature on the kitten was not a trick – the curly hair is real, and it’s likely that the kitten is a Selkirk rex breed.

This breed’s origins can be traced back to Miss DePesto, a peculiar rescue cat born in a Montana shelter in 1987. Out of her four siblings, she was the only one with curly hair.

She was adopted by Jeri Newman, a local Persian breeder, who later bred her with a black Persian. The litter produced six kittens, all with curly hair, leading Newman to realize that curly hair is a dominant genetic trait. And thus, the Selkirk rex breed was born.

The internet is abuzz with people sharing pictures of adorable felines sporting curly locks, also known as Selkirk Rex cats.

The roots of its existence can be linked back to a unique feline rescue named Miss DePesto.

In 1987, a shelter in Montana welcomed a litter of five kittens. Among them was a unique curly-haired kitty, distinct from her four siblings who had straight hair.

The breeder who took her in soon discovered that the curly fur of the young pup was a dominant genetic trait.

The lady mated a black Persian with it, resulting in a batch of six adorable kittens, each blessed with lovely curly fur.

The Selkirk Rex breed was brought into existence and named after a woman’s stepfather.

Rex was the name she gave to the lovely coat that had curls, which made it irresistible to many feline enthusiasts.

The internet has been receiving positive feedback.

The Internet can sometimes be a breeding ground for negativity and criticism. There are instances where people express their disapproval or disappointment in various forms such as comments, reviews, and social media posts. These negative reactions can range from constructive feedback to outright nasty remarks. It’s important to remember that not everyone will like what you do or say, and it’s best to take these reactions with a grain of salt. Instead of dwelling on the negativity, focus on the positive feedback and use the criticisms as an opportunity to improve.
